How to Cook Perfect Fluffy Rice

Have you ever cooked rice only for it to stick to the pan or undercooked it? Well read on to learn how you can cook perfect rice every time!

I like to follow guidelines taught by my mother  (Thanks mum! :) ) and always eat basmati rice, but you can substitute for brown or any other rice.

So lets get cooking!

What you will need:

  • Rice (any kind)
  • Salt
  • Any oil apart from olive oil

So first you need to measure the amount of rice you require. I like to use a cup to measure the quantity.

Once you've measured the rice add to a bowl and wash a few times to remove any impurities. Then fill with water covering the rice and leave for around 30 minutes or longer. This will allow the water to be absorbed and create fluffy rice!

Now you need to cook the rice. Fill up a pan with water, you will need to measure the water with the same cup you have used for the rice as this will allow for equal quantities. The rule is to use double the amount of water to the rice. So for example, if you have used one cup of rice you will need two cups of water.

Empty the water into the pan and add some salt which should be half quantity of the rice. So for example for one cup of rice add half a tablespoon of salt. Then add a few drops of oil to the water which will stop the rice from sticking to the pan. You can use any oil apart from olive oil, as this will make the rice stick. Once the water comes to the boil you may add the rice, just make sure you drain off the excess water before adding to the pan.

Leave the rice to cook on full heat until majority of the water has evaporated (there should still be some water in the pan!) For the final step turn the heat down to simmer and cook for a further 5 minutes. The steam inside the pan will cook the rice at a low temperature so it doesn't burn.

The rice should now be complete!
